April is not just the month when Summer officially blooms, but also it is a month to celebrate something worthwhile. Each year on April 2, we observe World Autism Awareness Day, a global initiative to promote acceptance, inclusion, and understanding of individuals on the autism spectrum. Let’s just cancel one mistake from our minds first, where autism becomes a life challenging disease. No. Autism is not a disability, or a disease; it is a different ability that brings along unique strengths, perspectives, and talents to our society. It is true that those on the spectrum oftentimes show the presence of certain behaviors which may differ from those that we are usually aware of, these behaviors are called restrictive or repetitive behaviors.
There have been great many talented names who were born with the autistic spectrum, but these restrictive behaviors never stopped them from filling our lives with a greater spectrum of learning and innovations. Renowned people like Leonardo da Vinci, Sir Isaac Newton, Lionel Messi, Bob Dylan, among many others. Have you read Pride and Prejudice or seen the movies based on it? Imagine that original work was also by an autistic woman whom we famously adore as Jane Austen. If they could, so can everyone else. What we need to do is, create an inclusive world.
Creating an inclusive world starts with awareness and action combined with the ever essential empathy. Whether in education, workplaces, or communities, fostering an environment that supports neurotypical individual’s help unlock their full potential. This would also ensure, for the future, a social community ready for evolution and challenges alike.
The next question we may have is ‘How can we support Inclusion?’
We can do it in a few simple ways.
- Listen and Learn – Understand the experiences of autistic individuals and build your own behavioral knowledge,
- Encourage Acceptance – Move beyond awareness to true inclusion where actions match words,
- Support Accessibility – Create spaces that cater to diverse needs, including tech-enabled spaces where required,
- Advocate for Equal Opportunities – Promote workplace and educational inclusivity.
